Assemblies of God church near me

Assemblies of God Great Britain is one of the UK's historic Pentecostal denominations, formed in 1924 when independent Pentecostal assemblies joined together while keeping each local church self-governing. Today AoG links several hundred churches across England, Scotland and Wales, from long-established town assemblies to recent plants meeting in schools. If you are looking for lively, Bible-centred, Spirit-filled worship, an AoG church is a natural place to start.

A British Pentecostal story

British Pentecostalism traces its spark to the 1904 Welsh Revival and to the meetings at All Saints' vicarage in Sunderland from 1907, where Alexander Boddy hosted gatherings that shaped a generation of Pentecostal pioneers. When Assemblies of God Great Britain formed in 1924, it chose a deliberately congregational pattern: each assembly owns its buildings, calls its own pastors and orders its own life, cooperating for mission, training and accountability. That remains the AoG character today, which is why individual churches carry names like Life Church, City Gate or Hope Assembly rather than a uniform brand.

The denomination is part of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, one of the largest Pentecostal families on earth, and has close cousins in the UK: Elim, the Apostolic Church and many newer networks. Our Pentecostal overview maps the whole scene.

Frequently asked questions

How is AoG different from Elim?

Theologically they are near neighbours. The practical difference is governance: Elim churches belong to a central denomination that holds properties and appoints ministers, while every AoG assembly is self-governing. As a visitor you would struggle to tell the services apart.

Will I stand out as a newcomer?

You will be noticed in the best sense: greeted at the door and probably invited for coffee. Nobody will make you speak, pray aloud or come forward. Dress is casual in almost every AoG church.

How do I find my nearest assembly?

Use the finder above or browse Assemblies of God listings in the directory, or work through your county page. Because church names vary, check the denomination line on each listing.
