Orkney's red sandstone St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall, founded by Norse earls in 1137, is Britain's most northerly cathedral and one of its most atmospheric. The islands' scattered parishes, chapels and ancient sites, from Orphir's round kirk to the Italian Chapel, tell nine centuries of island faith.
