What is church membership?

Church membership is the formal way of belonging to a local congregation. In Britain it takes very different shapes: the Church of England keeps an electoral roll rather than a membership list, Baptist churches vote new members in at church meetings, and plenty of churchgoers worship happily for decades without signing anything at all.

Do you have to be a member to attend?

No. Every church listed on this site will welcome you on a Sunday with no paperwork, no fee and no questions asked. This matters especially in the Church of England, where the parish system means the church exists for everyone who lives in the parish, not only for its regulars. You are entitled to worship at, be married in and have a funeral at your parish church simply because you live there. Membership, where it exists, is not a ticket through the door; it is a way of moving from visiting to belonging.

What membership looks like by tradition

Why bother with membership?

If you can attend freely without it, why join? Regular worshippers give several reasons:

What membership is not

Membership does not make anyone a better Christian than the faithful worshipper who never signs a form, and it is not a subscription: no UK church charges for belonging, though all rely on the generosity of their congregations. Nor does it bind you forever. People move house, move churches and move between traditions, and a healthy church will send you on your way with its blessing, often with a letter of transfer to your new congregation.

Taking the next step

If you have been worshipping somewhere for a while and it has quietly become your church, a conversation with the vicar, minister or pastor is all it takes to begin. Ask how belonging works in that congregation: joining the electoral roll, a membership or newcomers' course, preparation for confirmation, or believer's baptism. Our guide on how to join a church walks through the process tradition by tradition, and if you are still looking for the right congregation, start with how to choose a church.
