St Peter's Cathedral
The Cathedral Church of St Peter stands in the heart of the Falls, its two slender spires visible across much of west Belfast. Built in the 1860s by a rapidly growing Catholic population and raised to cathedral status in 1986, it is the seat of the Bishop of Down and Connor. St Peter's keeps the steady round you would expect of a cathedral parish: Sunday Masses, weekday Mass and confessions at published times, along with the diocese's major liturgies. It is a working parish church first, serving the streets around it as it has for a century and a half, and visitors are welcomed without fuss.
Clonard Monastery
Ask anyone in Belfast where the crowds go and they will say Clonard. The Redemptorist monastery church on the Falls Road, with its vast French Gothic interior, is one of the best-loved churches in Ireland. Its annual Solemn Novena in honour of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, held every June, draws tens of thousands of people across nine days of packed sessions, one of the largest regular religious gatherings anywhere in these islands. Clonard was also an early adopter of the webcam: its Masses and devotions are livestreamed daily, and many people, in Belfast and far beyond, count the Clonard stream as part of their routine. The monastery's quieter legacy matters too, for it was in its rooms that some of the earliest conversations of the peace process took place.
