St Eugene's Cathedral
The Cathedral of St Eugene rises above the Bogside, its spire one of the defining marks of the Derry skyline. Built through the second half of the nineteenth century with the pennies of a poor congregation, and named for the first bishop of the ancient see of Ardstraw, it is the mother church of the Diocese of Derry. The interior repays a slow look: soaring Gothic arches, rich stained glass and a stillness that survives even on busy days. As a cathedral parish it keeps a generous timetable, with Mass on Sundays and every weekday, confessions at set times and the great liturgies of the diocesan year. Its Masses are also streamed online, which many parishioners at a distance have come to rely on.
The Long Tower Church
A short walk away, just outside the city walls, stands St Columba's Church, Long Tower, the oldest Catholic church in the city. It takes its name from the round tower of the medieval monastery that once stood nearby, and it was built in the 1780s on ground associated with the Columban foundation itself, with contributions, notably, from Protestant as well as Catholic citizens of the day. The present interior, enriched over the centuries, is intimate and warmly loved, and devotion to St Columba remains at its heart. The Long Tower keeps its own round of Sunday and weekday Masses and devotions, and for many Derry families it is simply their church, as it has been for generations.

Beyond these two, the city's parishes cover the Waterside, Creggan, Shantallow and the villages beyond, and the wider county adds market-town parishes from Limavady to Magherafelt. The Irish pattern holds throughout: a vigil Mass on Saturday evening, morning Masses on Sunday, and daily Mass in most parishes. Devotions keep a firm place in the timetable, with novenas, adoration and the rosary widely observed, and confessions are usually heard on Saturdays and before major feasts.
